The Welcome Mat
There are so many Oklahoma writers- it would fill a book- actually two. Prairie City Lodge carries the name of one such book, Prairie City, by Angie Debo. So, creating our Home on the Range, for families and out-of-town visitors who need room to roam, seems, well- a good fit.
Trolley tours and living history are at your doorstep. Our very own historic publishing house, literary connections galore, and the first Carnegie Library in the state are available. Prairie City Lodge is great for a longer stay, too. It is perfect for people who want to explore Guthrie, see family or attend an event.
We are a lodge with a literary theme. We are a distant cousin of a hunting or fishing lodge, but our lure is the book!
We can suggest some special activities for journalists, poets, writers, librarians, teachers . . . or just book worms. Stay for two nights and watch the DVD "The Great Debaters". Visit nearby Langston University made famous by Melvin Tolson, poet and man of letters.
Stay three nights and watch a PBS special, visit Marshal, a literary landmark, Stillwater, and learn more about Dr. Angie Debo. Prairie City, a work of fiction, is a composite of many small Oklahoma towns, where grit, hard work, and love of land is central. It is the best story of main street ever written, I think!
If you have more time. . . take a guided walking tour, visit the Oklahoma History Center, watch "Cimarron" based on a true Oklahoma adventure and visit the Territorial Museum. Historic local literary figures include: Guthrian Fred S. Barde, newspaper man, and Paul Koeger, Oklahoma's second Poet Laureate. Discovering Oklahoma writers is right up there with a rattlesnake hunt- very exciting!
